This widely beloved breed who shot to popularity when the famous Shepherd known as Rin Tin Tin starred in movies and the television show of the same name. Originally bred in Germany and part of the herding group, the German Shepherd excels in just about any job or sport he puts his mind to due to his high intellect and eagerness to tackle the task at hand. Typically standing 20-27 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 50-100 pounds, the German Shepherd is versatile and adaptable, making him an excellent choice for a wide variety of households as well as work programs throughout the world, including the police, military, search and rescue, and service dogs.

It is claimed by some experts that the German Shepherd has the intelligence of a 7 year old child, which makes the breed a dream dog for the owner or family that is looking for a dog that is loyal, athletic, attentive, affectionate, and ready for fun.
This is a good breed choice for an active family as the Shepherd makes an ideal jogging buddy, loves to swim and hike, play fetch, and partake in dog sports such as agility or obedience trials. The flip side of their athletic abilities is the fact that the breed is extremely affectionate, and love their family, making this a very diverse breed. The German Shepherd is a vocal breed that is protective of the home and property and has different sounds and tones and is known as a talker whining and yipping to communicate with his family during playtime or cuddle time. The breed is also very Velcro, which means they thrive when they are with their beloved humans and like to be close by at all times.

The coat of a Shepherd is varied, from short to long-haired depending upon the bloodlines. The breed does shed but requires no professional grooming. Maintaining the coat is accomplished by frequent brushing to remove dead undercoat and the occasional bath.Colors vary from solid black, solid white, black/tan, black/sable, sable, black/silver. The average lifespan for the breed is 8-12 years
